Our journey starts with Bruce Tuckman’s classic framework of group development: Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing, and later Adjourning. These stages offer a practical, straightforward way to understand how groups evolve over time. However, while Tuckman provided a foundational structure, this blog will dig deeper into the member behaviors and key results needed at each stage.
One notable adjustment we’ll explore is dividing the “Storming” phase into two sections:
- Storming 1: Individuation focuses on helping group members recognize and value each other’s unique contributions.
- Storming 2: Managing Disagreement builds on this by teaching groups how to navigate conflicts constructively.
By addressing these aspects separately, groups can move past conflicts without devolving into dysfunction.
